How to Troubleshoot an Xbox With No Power

Your Xbox 360 won't turn on. No matter how many times you press the controller's center button or the power button on the console, nothing happens. Fortunately, troubleshooting an Xbox with no power is one of the easiest things you can troubleshoot on the console. Successful troubleshooting will save you the time and stress of dealing with Xbox Support and repair talks.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Eject" button on the console's disc tray. This will power on the console even if the issue is with your controller or the console's power button.

    • 2

Check your power supply and make sure it's connected properly to a working power outlet or surge protector. Make sure your surge protector is on if your Xbox is connected to one. While checking connections, make sure the power supply isn't damaged by checking for torn or frayed wires. If the power supply is damaged, you need to replace it.

    • 3

Lay your console horizontally and disconnect the power cord and any other cables you have connected to the console.

    • 4

Push your fingers into the USB door and pop the removable faceplate from the front of the console using your thumb. Check the faceplate for any damage or broken tabs. Make sure the four tabs around the power button on the rear of the faceplate aren't broken, checking that the four small tabs holding the power button in place aren't broken as well.

    • 5

Reattach the faceplate to the front of your console if none of the tabs are broken. If any are broken, you need to replace it.

    • 6

Reconnect your power supply to a working wall outlet or surge protector and your Xbox 360 console.

    • 7

Check the light on the power supply. If it's green or orange and the console doesn't power on, contact Xbox Support right away. If the light isn't illuminated at all even though it's connected to a working wall outlet, it needs to be replaced. If it's red, it likely overheated; fix this by unplugging the power supply from the wall outlet and console and lettting it rest for one hour. When you reconnect it, make sure it's in an open, well-ventilated area.
