How to Repair a Scratched XBox DVD

Game discs are superior to their cartridge ancestors in that they are able to contain much more information in a much smaller size: While multiple game cartridges can only be stored in bulky containers, several discs can be stored in relatively flat disc holders. However, game discs are susceptible to scratching, which can prevent your console from reading the data. Repairing even a significantly scratched Xbox disc is possible using an everyday household product.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the disc in warm water and polish with a lint-free cloth to remove any dirt, fingerprints or other detritus.

    • 2

Apply a pea-sized glob of non-gel toothpaste to the scratches on the disc surface.

    • 3

Lightly polish the disc in a circular motion. If the entire disc is scratched, apply more toothpaste and polish outward from the center.

The gritty texture of the toothpaste removes a thin layer of plastic around the scratches, evening out the surface of the disc and allowing the laser to read the data content.

    • 4

Wash off the toothpaste using warm water. Use your finger to lightly remove any stubborn paste.

    • 5

Dry the disc using a dry corner of the lint-free cloth. Test your disc in the Xbox console. If the disc is still unreadable, repeat the procedure.
