How to Save Xbox Games to a Hard Drive

If a gamer is planning on spending countless hours on just a few of their favorite Xbox 360 games, then saving them to an Xbox 360 hard drive may be a beneficial option to consider. The gains of saving a game to a hard drive may not be apparent because the disc must still be in the drive to play it. However, studies have proven that load times decrease substantially when a game is played off the hard drive because the disc drive doesn't have to do any work.

Upgrade your Xbox 360 so that it's running the latest software version by logging into Xbox Live and downloading a software update if prompted. If you do not have Xbox Live then you can visit Xbox.com to download the software update to a USB flash drive or a CD to install to the console. See the resources section for a link.

Insert a game disc into your console's disc tray. When it loads, exit to the dashboard. This is where you can save your game to your hard drive.

    • 3

Go to the first blade of the "My Xbox" section and press "Y." Notice that a new menu list opens.

    • 4

Scroll to "Install to hard drive" and press "A" to begin saving the game. You will not be able to do anything on your console until the saving process completes. A progress bar on-screen informs you of the saving progress.
