How to Upgrade 360 to Play Old XBox Games

The Xbox 360 has an upgradeable feature that allows it to play original Xbox games. However, a few steps must be taken in order to prep a 360 to play an original Xbox game. For instance, the Xbox 360 must be connected to Xbox Live in order to install the required download to play the specific game. Not only that, you must have the latest software version for your Xbox 360, which is also available through Xbox Live.

  View the original Xbox backwards compatibility list on Xbox.com to ensure that the game you wish to play on your Xbox 360 is compatible with your console (see the Resources section for the link).

  Power on your Xbox 360 console and sign into your Xbox Live profile. Your console will automatically prompt you to download the latest software update if one is available. If so, select "Yes, update." Your console will download and install the update and may reset.

  Log back into Xbox Live if your console resets.

  Insert a compatible original Xbox disc into your console. A prompt will appear informing you that your console must install an update in order to play the game.

  Allow your console to install the update. When it finishes, the game will be playable.
