How to Delete Updates on an XBox

Xbox gaming systems save maintenance and update files in what is called a "cache." These files come both from updating the system and updating individual games through Xbox Live. The files take up space on the game console's hard drive. Removing updates will not harm any games or the console itself, but it will free up hard drive space.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Xbox. You may need to select an input on your TV remote to switch from cable to the Xbox game player. An Xbox welcome screen, also called Xbox Dashboard, will appear on your TV.

    • 2

Click on "My Xbox" on the dashboard. Move your controller buttons and press the "A" button to select "My Xbox."

    • 3

Use the left scroll arrow and navigate to "System Settings." Click the "A" button to open the settings menu.

    • 4

Scroll down using your arrows and select "Memory." Click on the "A" button to launch the menu.

    • 5

Select your Xbox's hard drive or memory unit if you do not have a hard drive. If you run both, select the hard drive. Press the "Y" button on your controller. A new window will open.

    • 6

Press the following key sequence on your controller "X, X, LB, RB, X X." A maintenance window will pop up.

    • 7

Select "Yes" in the maintenance window to confirm you wish to delete updates from memory.

    • 8

      Restart the Xbox console.
