How to Format a Hard Drive for Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 does more than play video games. It includes a hard drive so gamers can save various forms of media to the console. Owners of the console can download games and movies, as well as copy CDs, to the hard drive. Players also can store game saves. It's possible to format the hard drive--for instance, in case the system is being sold. This erases all the files and leaves the hard drive clean for the next owner.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Xbox 360 and go to the Xbox 360 dashboard.

    • 2

Go to "System Settings," then select "Memory," then select "Storage Devices."

    • 3

Move the cursor over "Hard Drive" in the Storage Devices area. Press the "Y" button on your Xbox 360 remote control or controller.

    • 4

Select "Format" in the Device Options area. The system will prompt you: "This will delete all content on this device. Do you want to continue?" Click "Yes" to continue.
