How to Erase an Xbox Hard Drive

The Xbox 360 removable hard drive allows users to store all of their game data, music, videos and more. However, there may be a few occasions when gamers would like to erase all of that content, such as when they are selling their console or want to clear space for other data. Many users might resort to manually deleting each item saved to the hard drive, but this can take hours depending on the how much data it stored. Luckily, the Xbox 360 allows users to format their hard drives, which deletes all content.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Xbox 360 and connect your hard drive to the console if necessary.

    • 2

Open the dashboard by pressing the Xbox Guide button on your controller, pressing "Y," then selecting "Yes." Your Xbox 360 may automatically boot to the dashboard, depending on your settings.

    • 3

Open your "System Settings" from the "My Xbox" section of the dashboard. This opens a new menu.

    • 4

Select "Memory" from the "System Settings" menu list. This opens a dialogue window where you can select a storage device to view its content.

    • 5

Scroll to your hard drive then press "Y" to open a new "Device Options" window.

    • 6

Choose "Format" from the "Device Options" menu list. Your Xbox 360 will open a prompt informing you that this will delete all data from your hard drive.

    • 7

Choose "Yes." Your Xbox 360 will then begin formatting and deleting everything off the hard drive.
