How to Use a Cell Phone Headset on an Xbox 360 Controller

Released in 2005, the Xbox 360 has enjoyed international popularity. Microsoft's gaming powerhouse features Xbox Live, an online hub for game downloads, multiplayer action and social interaction. However, Microsoft's headsets used for social gaming are not as popular. Prone to break and create horrendous static, many gamers are opting for a replacement. Fortunately, most cell phone headsets are compatible with the Xbox 360 controller.

Instructions

  1. Installing the Headset

    • 1

Unplug your Xbox 360 controller. If your controller is wireless, remove the battery pack. You should do this because plugging a headset into a powered-on controller can cause temporary shorts within the circuitry.

    • 2

Plug your cell phone headset with a 2.5mm jack into the base of the controller. Make sure the plug is fully inserted.

    • 3

Use your 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter if you would like to use a cell phone headset with a 3.5mm jack. Plug the male end of the adapter into the controller and the 3.5mm headset jack into the female end.

    • 4

Plug in or power on your controller.

    Testing Your Headset

    • 5

Turn on your Xbox 360 and log on to Xbox Live.

    • 6

Go to your "Friends" list and view the profile of any friend. It doesn't matter if they are online or offline.

    • 7

Select "Send Message." On the subsequent window, select "Voice Message."

    • 8

Press the "Record" button (it looks like a white circle) and speak into your headset for 10 to 15 seconds. Press the "Stop" button when finished (it looks like a white square).

    • 9

Press the "Play" button (it looks like a white triangle) to play back your recording. You should hear your voice coming through your headset. Delete the message to avoid sending your test recording.
