How to Desolder Eeprom XBox 1.6

The popularity of the Xbox game console has led owners to modify its operating system for greater control. Modifying (or ̶0;moding̶1;) an Xbox involves installing a special computer chip in place of the existing EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) that is on the motherboard. You can remove the EEPROM from the Xbox̵7;s motherboard yourself, although doing so will void its warranty. You will need some hardware tools and experience using a soldering iron.

Things You'll Need

  • Bath towel
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Flat-edged screwdriver
  • Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver
  • Utility knife
  • Soldering iron
  • Tweezers
  • Solder removing braid
  • Flux
  • Model paint brush
  • Tissue paper

Instructions

  1. Opening The Xbox

    • 1

Remove all of the cables connected to the Xbox. Put the bath towel down on a work surface. Put the Xbox face down on the bath towel.

    • 2

Scratch off the white serial sticker and the metallic-colored warranty sticker using the tip of the torx screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the screws that are now revealed from under the two stickers.

    • 4

Insert the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver beneath each of the rubber feet on the corners at the bottom of the Xbox. Lift up on the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver to remove the rubber feet.

    • 5

Remove the screws revealed from under the rubber feet with the torx screwdriver.

    • 6

Turn the Xbox right side up and put it down on the bath towel. Grab the sides of the Xbox and lift the top cover up and off.

    • 7

Remove the two screws at the front left and right edges of the DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 8

Remove the screw from beneath the cable at the upper right edge of the DVD drive with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 9

Unplug the ribbon cable from the back of the hard drive, situated next to the DVD drive, with your fingers. Lift the hard drive up and off of the bottom of the Xbox.

    • 10

Pull the yellow cable attached to the DVD drive from out of its connection on the motherboard using your fingers. Lift the DVD drive up and remove it from the bottom of the Xbox.

    • 11

Pull out the white rectangular power plug situated next to the metal grill plate from the motherboard with your fingers.

    • 12

Remove the two screws from around the power supply, situated next to where the white rectangular power plug was, with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 13

Release the plastic tabs from around the power supply with the flat-edged screwdriver. Lift the power supply up and off the bottom of the Xbox.

    • 14

Remove the 11 screws from around the motherboard with the Phillips jeweler̵7;s screwdriver.

    • 15

Pull out all of the yellow cables connected to the motherboard with your fingers.

    • 16

Lift the motherboard up and out of the bottom of the Xbox. Place the motherboard down on the bath towel.

    • 17

Release the latches on both sides of the metal grill plate with the tip of the flat-edged screwdriver. Remove the metal grill plate.

    Removing The EEPROM

    • 18

Locate the EEPROM chip on the motherboard. It is under the metal grill plate and is marked ̶0;EEPROM."

    • 19

Apply pressure against each of the pins on one side of the EEPROM with the utility knife to cut through the pins. Repeat this procedure on all four sides of the EEPROM.

    • 20

Place the tip of the utility knife under one corner of the EEPROM. Slowly raise the its corner up and away from the motherboard.

    • 21

Remove the EEPROM from the motherboard, leaving the pins that were once connected to it on the motherboard. Discard the EEPROM.

    • 22

Heat up the soldering iron. Apply the tip of the soldering iron to one of the pins of the EEPROM that is now on the motherboard.

    • 23

Pull the pin off with the tweezers. Discard the pin. Repeat this procedure to remove all of the pins from the motherboard.

    • 24

Apply solder removing braid to the motherboard at one of the connections where a pin of the EEPROM was. Draw the soldering iron across the connection to remove the solder.

    • 25

Repeat this procedure with all of the connections where EEPROM pins were on the motherboard.

    • 26

Open the bottle of flux. Moisten the model paint brush in the flux. Apply flux to all of the connections where the pins of the EEPROM were on the motherboard.

    • 27

Wipe off the extra flux from the motherboard using the tissue.
