How to Hook Up an Xbox 360 to a Compatible HDTV Television

While all versions of the Xbox 360 come with standard A/V cables (for standard definition TVs), to get the most out of your Xbox 360 and HDTV, a component or HDMI connection will produce the best video and sound quality. Component and HDMI are designed to take advantage of the Xbox 360̵7;s 720p, 1080i and 1080p display output options.

  1. Component Connection

    • 1

      Connect the audio/video input of the component cable into the "A/V" port located on the back of the Xbox 360.

      Match the red, blue and green cables on the other end of the component cable to the corresponding component ports on your HDTV. If your HDTV has more than one set of component inputs, make note of which one you use.

      Slide the switch on the component cable to ̶0;HDTV."

      Turn on your HDTV. Set the video mode to the component port that will be used. HDTVs with multiple component ports will usually be labeled ̶0;Component 1," ̶0;Component 2" and so on.

      Turn on the Xbox 360. Go to ̶0;My Xbox." Select ̶0;System Settings" then ̶0;Console Settings̶1; then ̶0;Display̶1; and then ̶0;HDTV Settings." Choose the display setting (720p, 1080i and 1080p) that is best compatible with your HDTV. If you̵7;re not sure, try them all until you find the one that looks best.

    HDMI Connection

      Disconnect any previously connected A/V or component cables.

      Connect the HDMI AV cable connector to the "HDMI AV" port on the Xbox 360.

      Connect the other end to an available HDMI port on your HDTV. If your HDTV has more than one HDMI input, make note of which one you use.

      Turn on your HDTV. Set the video mode to the HDMI port that will be used. HDTVs with multiple component ports will usually label them "HDMI 1," "HDMI 2" and so on.

      Turn on the Xbox 360. Go to ̶0;My Xbox." Select ̶0;System Settings̶1; then ̶0;Console Settings̶1; then ̶0;Display̶1; and then ̶0;HDTV Settings." Pick the display setting (720p, 1080i and 1080p) that looks best on your HDTV.
