How to Hook Up Your Old Hard Drive to a New Xbox

When you buy a new Xbox 360 console, you don't need to start from scratch with a fresh hard drive. If you've stored save files, arcade games and media files on your old Xbox 360 hard drive, you may want to transfer them to the new console. The original Xbox 360, as well as the S and E models, feature removable external hard drives that you can swap between consoles.

Instructions

  1. Xbox 360 S and E Models

    • 1

Turn off your Xbox 360 and position it horizontally.

    • 2

Find the hard drive cover on the right side of the console. If you have an Xbox 360 E model, locate the cover release lever at the back of the console. On an S model, the release lever is on the cover door.

    • 3

Pull the release lever down and forward to open the cover door.

    • 4

Pull the hard drive tab toward you to remove the drive from the console.

    • 5

Slide the old hard drive into the new Xbox 360 console with the green arrow facing up and pointing toward you. Replace the cover door.

    Original Xbox 360

    • 6

Turn off your Xbox and stand the console vertically with the hard drive facing up.

    • 7

Push the hard drive release button. When the hard drive ejects, remove it from the console.

    • 8

Position the large end of the hard drive at the back of the drive bay on the new Xbox console.

    • 9

Push the smaller front end of the hard drive down so the device locks in place.
