How to Build a Cottage in Minecraft for Xbox

Just because the virtual world is out to get you and you spend every game night in "Minecraft" hiding from creepers, zombies, skeletons, spiders and other nasties, it doesn't mean your dwelling can't be both functional and attractive. For example, safety concerns aside, you can easily build yourself a quaint little cottage. If you're willing to sacrifice some space and gather additional materials, you can even ensure that your cottage is relatively monster-proof, although you'll need to do some rebuilding in the unhappy event of a creeper explosion.

Consider your needs. If you are building the cottage to use as a base, you will need space to place chests, furnaces, a crafting table and a bed. Depending on whether you are playing on Peaceful difficulty or not, you may want to consider using explosion-proof building materials for the walls. If you are playing in Creative mode, none of these considerations apply as you are likely building the cottage purely for looks.

    • 2

Determine what kind of building materials you have available. Without a large supply of clay, for example, using brick or hardened clay blocks to build your cottage would be impractical. Similarly, using mossy stone bricks or moss stone can help you get the look of an old cottage just right, but you're unlikely to have many of those blocks on hand, unless you've found and demolished multiple jungle temples, dungeons and strongholds. Again, these considerations don't apply if you are playing in Creative mode as you have an endless amount of all block types.

    • 3

Decide how you want your cottage to look based on the materials you have available. For example, you could build your cottage entirely from wood for a rustic look, or you could mix in some stone, cobblestone or bricks to get a more refined appearance.

Plan out your cottage on squared paper, using one square per block. Draw the ground floor, all four walls and any floors you may want to add beyond the first. You should also plan out the roof and mark where you are placing windows and doors. If you want to build the walls several blocks thick to account for a middle layer of explosion-proof material such as obsidian ̵1; a good idea if you aren't playing on Peaceful difficulty but still want your cottage to have wooden walls both on the outside and the inside -- remember to account for that when drawing your plan.

    • 5

Calculate the amount of materials you need using the plan and note them. Add 10 extra blocks for each type of material to allow for extras in case you miscalculated. Gather all the materials in your inventory; if they won't all fit, place one or more chests near your building site and store them there. If you are playing in Creative mode, this step is not necessary since you have an unlimited amount of all block types on hand.

Build your cottage. Follow your plan closely; if you made any mistakes during the design stage, you may need to adjust during the building process.
