How Far Back Should You Be From a Kinect?

Because the Xbox 360 Kinect uses your entire body as a video game controller, where you stand can determine how well the Kinect performs. While the distance that you stand away from the Kinect can impact the device's performance, you must also take into consideration the lighting conditions in your room, where the Kinect is positioned in the room and if the Kinect is properly calibrated to the specific layout of your gaming room.
  1. Kinect Placement

    • To operate at peak efficiency, the Kinect sensor should be placed at least two feet off of the floor and as high as six feet from the floor. You can place the sensor above or below your television as long as the sensor can lay horizontally, is not obstructed by any other objects and is laying on a flat surface. Avoid placing the Kinect sensor on a vibrating surface, such as a stereo speaker or sub-woofer, as the vibrations can impact the Kinect's ability to accurately read your movements.

    Where to Stand

    • The Kinect sensor needs to see your entire body, from the top of your head to the tips of your feet. Microsoft recommends that players be at least 40 inches tall. Your play area should be free of obstructions, such as coffee tables, chairs or other furniture. Microsoft recommends that the first player stand approximately six feet from the sensor while the second player should stand eight feet from the sensor to allow for a full range of movement without impeding the other player's gaming space. Baggy clothing and hats may make it difficult for the Kinect sensor to recognize your movements.

    Lighting

    • The Kinect requires a good source of lighting to be able to recognize your movements quickly and accurately. Your room should be lit to the point that your face is clearly visible on-screen. Heavy back lighting and direct sunlight may make it difficult for the Kinect to track your movements or identify you from another player.

    Calibration

    • Kinect-capable games all come with a calibration card that can be used to adjust how the Kinect tracks your movements. To re-calibrate the Kinect, press the "Guide" button on your controller and navigate to the "Settings" menu. Select "Kinect Tuner" and then "Calibration." Hold the calibration card until it is recognized by the Kinect sensor. Your screen will display a pair of glasses and your calibration card has a set of eyes on it. Move the calibration card until the eyes on your calibration card fit within the glasses and hold the card still until prompted to move the calibration card. After several movements, your Kinect sensor will be re-calibrated.
