Can You Use a Wireless Xbox Controller for a Flight Simulator?

While it may not offer the same experience as a joystick, an Xbox 360 wireless controller can act as a gamepad for flight simulators that have compatible software. Before hooking up the controller, read the literature that goes with your flight simulator to ensure that it's compatible with the Xbox 360 wireless controller. Xbox 360 controllers work with any PC running Windows XP or later and require a software installation to run. You must have a wireless gaming receiver to connect the controller to your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the USB input on the wireless gaming receiver into an empty USB port on your computer.

    • 2

Insert the software disc into your computer and follow the prompts to set up the wireless gaming receiver.

    • 3

      Restart the computer, if prompted.

    • 4

Press the guide button on the wireless controller and then press the button on the wireless gaming receiver.

    • 5

Press the connect button on the back of the Xbox 360 wireless controller. The lights will flash until the two units are connected and then will stay lit.

    • 6

Turn on your flight simulator and start a game. Press the left and right joysticks on the Xbox controller to see whether it moves the airplane. If it doesn't, look at your settings and see whether you can adjust what type of controller the flight simulator uses. Choose "Xbox controller" or "gamepad" if the options are available.
