Instructions
Eat everything you find. One way to level up your alchemy skill, which governs the strength of each potion you create, is to sample all of the ingredients at least once. Press ̶0;A̶1; every time you find an ingredient in the wild or in someone̵7;s house, and then press down on the direction pad to open your inventory. Scroll to ̶0;Ingredients,̶1; and then press ̶0;A̶1; to eat the selected item. You̵7;ll learn the properties of that item and slowly increase your alchemy skill. You can̵7;t learn the skills twice per ingredient, so only eat new things.
Look for special alchemy equipment to practice your skills. As you increase your character̵7;s alchemy skill you̵7;ll have access to better equipment. Buy or steal a mortar and pestle from the first character that̵7;s selling one or hiding one in their shop. You need the mortar and pestle to combine ingredients, which increases your alchemy skill as you go. Also look for a retort, calcinator and alembic. Each vessel type affects the properties of the potions you make.
Press ̶0;A̶1; on the mortar and pestle in your inventory to start crafting potions. Select ingredients using ̶0;A̶1; to add them to the mixture and then press ̶0;A̶1; again to craft the potion. Select other apparatus from your inventory to create different potions, as the retort, calcinator and alembic each create different strengths of potions with different effects, and each different type helps you level up.
Make new potions each time you level up. Like every skill in "Oblivion," alchemy has five rankings: novice (levels 0 ̵1; 24), apprentice (24 ̵1; 49), journeyman (50 ̵1; 74), expert (75 ̵1; 99) and master (100). The potions you create as a novice are weaker than those you create as an apprentice, and so on through to master. Recreating familiar potions at each ranking helps build the skill. As a master, your potions will be the most potent in the game.
