How to Make Obsidian in Minecraft in Survival on Xbox

Obsidian is the strongest building material in "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition," but in Survival mode, it's rare to find a natural source of the stone. Obsidian only forms where water flows into lava, typically only occurring deep below the surface in underground caves. If you'd rather avoid the time-consuming task of hunting for obsidian, you can make some yourself by building a basic farm. Once you've made enough obisdian, use it to craft tools, build a fortified home or make a portal to the dangerous Nether realm.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a bucket by combining three iron ingots at a crafting table. Craft as many buckets as you can fit in your inventory.

    • 2

Find a water source. Fill several buckets with water.

    • 3

Find a lava pool. Lava usually flows in deep trenches and underground caves. Collect several buckets of lava.

    • 4

Dig a trough that's seven blocks long. Drop one dirt or stone block at both ends of the trough.

    • 5

Pour one bucket of lava into the center of the trench. Wait for the lava to spread out and fill the entire trench.

    • 6

Pour a bucket of water onto one of the raised blocks at either end of the trench. Obsidian forms when the water touches the lava. Collect the remaining water with the bucket.

    • 7

Mine the obsidian with a diamond pickaxe for fastest results. To make a diamond pickaxe, combine three diamonds with two sticks. If you use a different type of pickaxe, it can take several minutes to break down one block of obsidian.
