What Ports to Forward for Media Player 360

Most routers are designed to automatically block connections trying to go through ports that aren̵7;t used by normal Internet programs, such as Web browsers. If you are trying to use the Xbox 360 Media Center (the Xbox 360̵7;s media player) and you aren̵7;t able to connect to the Internet, it is likely that your router is blocking the connection. To disable connection blocking on the ports Xbox Media Center uses, you need to log in to your router̵7;s setup menu and configure port forwarding for the ports in question.
  1. Log in to Your Router̵7;s Setup Menu

    • Depending on your router manufacturer, there may be multiple methods for entering the setup menu, but there is one method that will work no matter what router you have. Type the router̵7;s internal IP address, usually ̶0;192.168.0.1,̶1; ̶0;192.168.1.1̶1; or ̶0;192.168.2.1,̶1; into the address bar of your Web browser. When prompted, provide your user name and password to log in to your router̵7;s setup menu.

Locate the Port Forwarding Section of the Menu

    • The section you need to get into will be labeled ̶0;Port Forwarding/Triggering,̶1; or something very similar, and will usually be located in the ̶0;Advanced̶1; tab of the menu. If you can̵7;t find it, get out your router̵7;s user manual, and look up ̶0;Port Forwarding̶1; in the index. Once you are in the Port Forwarding section of the configuration menu, you will be ready to set up forwarding for the Xbox 360 Media Center ports.

Set Up a Custom Port Forwarding Service

    • To forward the ports used by the Xbox 360 Media Center, create four custom services. To create a custom service, select the ̶0;Port Forwarding̶1; option near the top of the page, and then click the ̶0;Add Custom Service̶1; button. Depending on your router manufacturer the button may be labeled something different, such as ̶0;Custom Rule,̶1; but it will be similar. A new page will now open up.

Forward the Ports Used by the Xbox 360 Media Center

    • The ports you need to forward for the Xbox 360 Media Center are 53, 80, 88 and 3074. Type a name for the first service in the ̶0;Service Name̶1; field, such as ̶0;XboxMC1,̶1; type ̶0;53̶1; in the ̶0;Starting Port̶1; and ̶0;Ending Port̶1; fields, and then type the last digits of your Xbox 360̵7;s IP address in the ̶0;Server IP Address̶1; field. To find the IP address, click on the ̶0;Attached Devices̶1; link in the ̶0;Maintenance̶1; tab of the menu. Apply the port forwarding setting by clicking the ̶0;Apply̶1; button, and then create three more port forwarding services for the remaining ports that need to be forwarded (80, 88 and 3074). Once all four ports are forwarded, the Xbox 360 Media Center will be able to connect to the Internet.
