My 360 Doesn't Disconnect from My Router

The Xbox 360 is a gaming powerhouse, able to render high definition graphics and serve as a true media hub. The console has the ability to download games, movies and television shows. Simultaneously, the console can charge game controllers and other devices via Universal Serial Bus. The primary reason why the Xbox 360 console stays connected to the router is to continue to download requested content after the console is shut down.
  1. Background Downloads

    • Since many downloads are 1-2 gigabytes in size and downloads cease once you go online to play a game, it is often convenient to continue the download after you shut down for the evening. If you have "Background Downloads" activated in the 360's setup menu, the green power light will slowly flash off and on after you power off and a download is in process.

    Gamer Profile

    • You can remain connected to the router and the Xbox Live service if you have the console set to automatically log your gamer profile on after you boot up the system. You can manually disengage this connection, but any achievements and other features requiring an online connection will not register during game play. Set the console to the manual setting for profile log-in if you wish to stay offline for your gaming session.

    IP Conflict

    • If you have multiple gaming consoles connected to the Internet, one console may disconnect while the other never does. If this happens, head into your router settings to make sure that multiple devices are not attempting to share the same address. To do this, type the preset router IP address into your address bar. The settings for your router should appear. Most routers have an option to "forget" all disconnected devices. Turn all consoles off or physically disconnect them from the network. Set the router to clear all unused devices. Turn on each device sequentially, allowing each to be re-discovered. You will have a new IP address for each device, preventing conflicts.

    Wired Connections

    • A method of ensuring that your 360 doesn't randomly and unpredictably disconnect from your router is to use an Ethernet-based hard wired connection. Wireless transmissions operate on the 2.4 gigahertz range, subject to interference from microwave ovens, baby monitors, and other devices all competing for the same space. Using a wired connection is more secure and not subject to these types of interference. Only use wireless if it is impossible to get a wire to your console from your router.
