The Crucible
Your first visit to the Crucible is during the quest "The Hero of Will." You must survive all eight rounds for a chance to join Lucien's army, allowing you to penetrate his fortress: the Spire. The Crucible is located in Westcliff at the north end of town. Before entering the Crucible, stock up on health potions and upgrade your weapons at either of the two stalls in front of the Crucible's entrance. After you enter the Crucible, you cannot leave until the tournament is completed. Speak to Mad-dog, the Crucible guard at the front gate, to enter the Crucible and begin the tournament.
Winning the Crucible
The Crucible is separated into eight waves of enemies. To win, you must successfully defeat all eight waves. Each wave features a different type of enemy, with the difficulty increasing with each wave you complete. For example, Wave 1 features only beetles, while the final wave features a rock troll. Once the eighth wave is completed, you are crowned the Crucible champion. If you defeat a wave under the time limit, shown in the lower right corner of the screen, it counts as a perfect score. However, perfect scores are not worth anything the first time you compete in the Crucible, so you do not need to focus on achieving them just yet. Upon winning, you are awarded 1,000 coins, a title and a trophy. After your win, you are recruited by Lucien and sent to work in the Spire.
Replaying the Crucible
To replay the Crucible, you must complete the story segment involving the Spire that occurs after winning the Crucible the first time. If you attempt to replay the Crucible before going to the Spire, the door does not open and the guards will not let you in. Once the story segment involving the Spire is complete, you can replay the Crucible at any time you want by speaking to Mad-dog in front of the gates. The Crucible is an excellent source of experience points for your character due to the amount of enemies you must fight. In addition, you can win a legendary weapon when replaying the Crucible. You can replay the Crucible as many times as you wish.
Reward for Replaying the Crucible
Unlike the first time you fought through the Crucible as part of the storyline, perfect scores are important for your second play-through. Gain a perfect score in all eight waves, and you are awarded a legendary weapon. This weapon is The Chopper, an axe that inflicts 91-level damage per swing. Two augments are also on The Chopper: discipline and stoneskin. The discipline augment allows you to earn more experience when using The Chopper, while stoneskin increases your resistance to receiving scars on your face and body. If you choose to sell The Chopper, it is worth 16,200 gold coins. You receive The Chopper only the first time you replay the Crucible and achieve all eight perfect scores. Subsequent wins are rewarded with varying amounts of gold.
