How to Get Hitachi Drives Into Mode B With Two-Wire Tricks

The Hitachi DVD drive in the Xbox 360 can be set into Mode B by using two wires when the Xbox boots up. This mode is used to back up and restore firmware to the drive. Typically you will need to connect your Xbox 360 to your computer to back up the firmware on the Hitachi DVD drive or to restore a backed-up copy of the firmware. Note that there is a significant risk of damaging your DVD drive and rendering it inoperable if this process is not carried out precisely.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the power cable from the back of the Hitachi DVD drive. Hold the cable in the same orientation as it was removed from the back of the drive.

    • 2

Insert a sewing pin next to the wire in the top-right corner. Do not pierce the wire's insulation, just slide the pin into the white, plastic connector parallel to the wire. Do the same for the wire in the lower-left corner.

    • 3

Bend the pins so that the gap between them can be bridged by the legs of the resistor.

    • 4

Plug the power cable back into the Hitachi drive. Touch the legs of the resistor to the pins.

    • 5

Press the power button on the Xbox, and as soon as you see the LED light up under the power button, remove the resistor. The drive is in mode B if the green LED light flashes rapidly.

    • 6

Remove the pins one at a time.
