Xbox Troubleshooting: Laser Lens

If your XBOX is giving you an error citing a dirty or damaged disc, it may or may not be the disc at all. Such an error is given when the laser lens cannot properly read the disc, but there are several things that may be causing the issue. Troubleshooting the laser lens can be done in just a few steps.
  1. Checking the Disc

    • Usually if you are having a problem playing a disc, either a video game or a DVD, the problem is the disc itself. Examine the disc for smudges, scratches, dust and other debris. Clean it with a soft microfiber cloth and rubbing alcohol before re-inserting it into the XBOX and attempting to play the disc again.

    Cleaning the Drive

    • If the disc still will not work, the problem may be that your drive tray is dirty. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the open drive tray and fan in the back of the XBOX. Next, use a microfiber cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to gently clean the tray of any debris that may interfere with the laser reading the disc.

    Cleaning the Laser

    • After cleaning the tray, use a DVD cleaning disc purchased at any major electronics store. Apply the liquid included in the package to the tiny brush on the bottom of the cleaning disc. Insert the disc into your XBOX and let it run. Typically, the disc will play a short clip of video or music while it cleans the laser and lens at high speeds. Remove the disc from the XBOX drive when prompted. Insert a video game or DVD to verify the laser lens is working.

    Tech Support

    • If your laser lens is still not reading video games or DVDs, contact XBOX customer support. If your XBOX is new or was purchased within the last 90 days, it should still be under the Microsoft warranty. If it is not new, technical support should be able to walk you through ways to deal with the problem or provide options for repair.
