Position Kinect
An improperly positioned Kinect sensor may interfere with the calibration process. Attach the sensor to the center of the top or bottom of your television. Keep the sensor at least two feet off the floor but no higher than six feet. Do not place the sensor within one foot of speakers. The sensor must move up and down to track your movements, so ensure that nothing obstructs its motions. Do not put the sensor in an enclosed glass cabinet; the glass may obstruct the Kinect's view of your movements, making it difficult to calibrate the device.
Recalibrate Kinect
After the Kinect sensor is correctly positioned, recalibrate it. You need a calibration card to recalibrate the Kinect. Each Kinect video game comes with its own calibration card. If you do not have a card, you can buy an official calibration card from the Microsoft website. After acquiring a calibration card, press the controller's "Guide" button and then select "Kinect Tuner."
Hold up the calibration card in front of the sensor until the picture on the card appears onscreen. Move the card around until the green onscreen glasses perfectly cover the eyes on the card. After the card is correctly positioned, hold it there for a few seconds to let the sensor calibrate. Repeat the process if prompted. When finished, the message "Calibration Complete" appears.
Kinect Tuner and Adjusting Angle
The Kinect Tuner guide troubleshoots the sensor if it has trouble tracking your movements. Tap the "Guide" button, choose "Kinect Tuner" and then select "Tracking." The system instructs you to stand in front of the sensor. Your body, represented as a green outline, appears on the screen. Select "Adjust Angle" if parts of your body do not appear. Stop adjusting when you see your whole body on the screen.
Tracking Test
From the Kinect Tuner main menu, choose "Tracking Test." Stand directly in front of the sensor and look at the image of your body that appears on the screen. If you see yourself on the screen and do not see a green outline, the Kinect sensor cannot see your face. Remove any hat or sunglasses you are wearing and shine a bright light in your direction. Choose "Try Again" until the sensor sees you. If a green image appears onscreen but only parts of you show up, you are likely standing too far away. Move forward and select "Try Again" until you see your entire body on the screen.
