Different Kinds of Mods for the Xbox

Xbox enthusiasts may want to modify their machine or controllers. After-market modifications, such as different covers, clear or colored controller covers, controller action modifications and security modifications are available. After-market modifications that require opening the Xbox case or adding a computer chip should only be done if the warranty has expired and completed by an expert. Installing computer chips or changing LED lights that requires opening the case will void the warranty and may damage the Xbox.
  1. Controllers

    • Controller modifications, such as rapid fire and colorful or clear covers, are available for wireless and wired Xbox controllers. Controller modifications are easily installed by opening the controller and placing a computer strip on top of the controller computer board. Conductive glue may be used to secure the strip and the controller is then reassembled. Rapid fire controller modifications are useful for shooting games, such as Halo and Call of Duty.

    Cases

    • You can also change the color of the power light and the case colors. Select from clear cases, colored cases or opaque ghost cases. Colorful and distinct case covers are available from online parts suppliers and some retail stores. Cases should be modified only after the warranty has expired. Opening the case can void any remaining manufacturer's warranty. The standard Xbox LED lights can be changed to different colors when the case is modified.

    Mod Chips

    • Modification chips, or mod chips, can be installed on the Xbox computer board to expand the capabilities of the machine. Modification chips can be programmed to interface with computer systems, play DVDs and disable security features. Disabling some Xbox security features can allow users to play archive copies of legally purchased games. Playing archive copies preserves the original disk.

    Warranty and DMCS

    • Xbox modification can void the warranty. Removal of the original Xbox case cover, installation of additional computer chips or software modifications can result in no warranty coverage in the event the machine fails even if that failure is due to a manufacturer's defect. Modification chips, also called "mod chips," that circumvent Xbox security measures to prevent playing pirated games may violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
