Physical Space Requirements for Kinect

Hollywood blockbusters use motion-capture technology to make animation more realistic and to create life-like creatures and monsters. That technology has now invaded homes through video game systems such as the Kinect from Xbox 360, which uses special sensors to create avatars that respond to a player's every move. Kinect also features skeletal tracking and facial and voice recognition. To take advantage of Kinect's many game features, you must have the right amount of room in your apartment, condominium or house.
  1. Sensor Positioning

    • Before you can create the space required to enjoy your new Kinect, you must set up the unit's motion sensor so that it's positioned to see your entire body. The sensor must be placed on a flat surface such as a shelf that is stable and solid. It should be placed two- to six feet up from the floor and no more than six inches above or below your television. Sensors will not operate efficiently if placed in extreme light, including sunlight, or if they are within a foot of a set of speakers. For small rooms, place the sensor a full six feet from the ground for optimal use.

    Playing Area

    • To demonstrate its full innovation, Kinect's motion sensor must be able to scan a player's entire body without obstruction. Therefore, it's important that you clear away any furniture that stands between the sensor area, television and where you will be playing the game. The area designated for the game must be at least six feet wide, but not wider or longer than 12 feet.

    Lighting

    • Another important aspect of the physical space is that the room be well lit. For the Kinect sensor to operate properly, there must be adequate light to make your face visible. Natural light from the sun that streams through a side or back window can obscure or blur your face, which prevents the sensor from reading your movements. Players standing in front of the Kinect unit should be lit from the front. Minimize all side or back light to avoid a washout effect.

    Player Distance

    • The maximum number of Kinect players is two. If you're playing the game by yourself, the recommended distance to stand away from the sensor is six feet. If you are playing with or against another player, you should both stand a minimum of eight feet back from the sensor so that it can track both your movements at the same time.
