How to Format a Hard Drive to Read an Xbox360 Slim

Format your external hard drive to use its storage capacity to transfer videos, MP3s and other media files to your Xbox 360 Slim. You must format the drive to work with the console, as the Xbox console can only read drives in the FAT64 configuration. The format will change the type of the hard drive file system, but will also erase all the files saved to the disks, so save any important files on a separate location before performing the format.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the USB cable from the hard drive into an open USB port on your computer.

    • 2

Click the Windows Start button and click "Control Panel." Click the "System Security" option and click the "Administrative Tools" option.

    • 3

Click the "Disk Management" option under the "Storage" section. Right-click "USB Drive" and click "Format." Click the "Format Type" menu and click "FAT64."

    • 4

Click "OK," then click "OK" in the prompt that appears to format the hard drive to file system type that is readable on your Xbox 360 Slim.
