How Does the WiFi Work on an Xbox 360 Slim?

The Xbox 360 was originally released worldwide in November 2005, with a few additional versions being released later. However, in June 2010, Microsoft completely overhauled the console, releasing the Xbox 360 Slim. Not only did the company change the outside look and feel of the device, but the way it works internally is also different. In particular, the ability to connect to Xbox LIVE via Wi-Fi no longer requires additional hardware, because the Slim features a Wi-Fi antenna inside the console.
  1. Changes in Wi-Fi

    • One of the major changes seen in the Xbox 360 Slim is the inclusion of a Wi-Fi antenna inside the console itself. All previous models required an additional adapter that had to be purchased separately and inserted onto the console's backside USB ports. The Slim removed this need because everything is internal. However, it also removed the Ethernet cable port from its backside, so you cannot have a wired connection -- only wireless.

    Different Dashboards

    • Depending on whether you purchased a Kinect device with your system, you may have one of two different kinds of dashboard appearances. The original dashboard without Kinect displays a green dashboard with green menu squares. With Kinect, the dashboard changes to a green one with white menu squares. The green menu options go off into the background while the white menu options just go horizontally on the same plane. It is important to know the difference between the two, because connecting your Wi-Fi is a different procedure with each one.

    Connecting the Wi-Fi

    • Both Wi-Fi configurations can be found under "Network Settings" in your system settings. On a non-Kinect menu, you must scan your wireless network on the "Basic Settings" screen. On a Kinect menu, you can select your network in the list that appears. On either menu, selecting your signal will prompt you to enter the password to your router. If you haven't changed your router's password, you can find it printed on a sticker on the device itself.

    Differences Between Consoles

    • If you don't know what kind of Xbox 360 you have, you can tell just by looking at it. The older models are thick and smooth on the surface, featuring USB ports and an Ethernet port on its backside. The power button has a green ring broken up into four sections wrapped around it, and the button itself has a standard power symbol. The Slim console is slimmer, has a more angular surface with no ports on the back, and the power button is a touch-sensitive platform with a single green dot in the middle.
