How to Fix E71 on JTAG

The Joint Action Test Group (JTAG) modification available for Xbox 360 users is a mod that allows gamers to play burned games on the system. If you are getting the E71 error on your Xbox 360 console, the console is overheating. The clamps holding the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) inside the Xbox 360 will bend if they are overheated. You can replace these clamps to eliminate the E71 error on your console.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the power cable and the video cables from the back of your console. Pull the front faceplate off of the unit with your fingers.

    • 2

Use your thumb to pry open the plastic tabs on the console's outer case. Use a Torx screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal interior casing to the unit. Slide the interior case away from the unit.

    • 3

Pull the DVD drive out of the 360 and then unplug the red and black SATA cables from the back of the DVD drive.

    • 4

Locate the two X-clamps on the motherboard. These are located on the front right side. Use a small screwdriver to remove the screws holding them in place.

    • 5

Pull the X-clamps out of the unit and then use a paper towel to clean the old thermal compound off the motherboard. Add the thermal compound that came with your X-clamps replacement clips to the motherboard and then replace the screws holding the new X-clamps in place.

    • 6

Replace the DVD drive and then reconnect the STAT cable to the DVD drive. Close the metal cover and use a Torx screwdriver to secure it to the casing.

    • 7

Replace the outer plastic case to the unit and then slap the faceplate back onto the unit casing. Replace the power and video cables and turn on your system without the E71 error.
