How to Hook Up Kinect to TV

Microsoft Kinect is a bundle available from Microsoft as Xbox 360 Kinect, allowing players to immerse themselves into a virtual reality-type gaming experience. With Kinect, gamers are detected with the system's own sensor, giving players a virtual presence on screen and capturing any and all movements during games. Hooking up the Kinect to your TV does not require extensive skills although you will need an open space and a bit of time to properly configure the system before you begin playing.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360 Kinect System
  • Controller
  • Kinect Sensor (and USB cable)
  • Video cables

Instructions

    • 1

Observe the room you plan to hook the Xbox Kinect up in to ensure you have adequate playing room and space for at least one player (additional space for two). Having a space of 6-by-6 feet for one player is recommended by Microsoft, and an 8-by-6-foot space for two playing together.

    • 2

Remove excess furniture such as end and coffee tables from the room you plan to play in to ensure a higher quality signal from the Kinect sensor.

    • 3

Place the Kinect's sensor mechanism in the center of the top of your television set, if possible. If you do not have the room or capability to place the sensor equipment on top of your TV set, place it in the center level with your TV (on an entertainment center or television stand). Avoid placing the sensor to either the right or left of the television as well as on the ground as it may not read those in its path properly.

    • 4

Plug the power cord into the back of the Xbox 360 Kinect and plug the opposite end into a working outlet.

    • 5

Grab the USB lead that comes with the Kinect's sensor and ensure it is connected well with the sensor. Plug the USB port into the Xbox 360 Kinect where the Kinect USB port is located (on the back of the system).

    • 6

Plug the video cable jack into the proper port located on the back of the Xbox Kinect system. Grab the yellow, white and red opposite end plugs and find open ports on the back or side of your TV. Use an available jack or port, such as "Component 1" or "Video 1." Match the red, white and yellow cords into the appropriate ports, all together in one section. The white and red plugs represent your sound while the yellow is for the video when playing.

    • 7

Power up your television and change the input on it to the section or port you selected on your TV (including "Component 1" or "Video 1"). Turn on the system by pressing the button on the front of the Xbox 360 Kinect or by powering up your controller (pressing and holding the center power button). Allow the Kinect to boot up for the first time and follow the on-screen instructions to log in to your Xbox Live account and begin playing Kinect.
