How to Softmod Your Xbox Using Splinter Cell

Microsoft's original first-generation Xbox is a video game system capable of acting as both a media center and a storage device. "Softmodding" the Xbox, or modifying the Xbox's operating system, allows users more complete access to the Xbox's storage and media player capabilities, and also allows users to run "homebrew" (user-created) applications that are otherwise not supported by Microsoft's default operating system.

Things You'll Need

  • "Splinter Cell" Xbox game
  • Action Replay for Xbox
  • Ldots iTools SC 1.8 software
  • Xbox card to USB male converter

Instructions

    • 1

Download iTools SC 1.8 from any website that hosts the file. Double-click the file and extract the two .zip files to the desktop of your computer. Keep these two .zip files on hand.

    • 2

Install onto your computer the official Action Replay software that is bundled with the Xbox Action Replay module. Once installed, plug the USB-to-memory card converter into an available USB port on your computer. Insert the Xbox memory card into the memory card converter.

    • 3

Open up the Action Replay software on your computer by double-clicking the icon. Once the software is running, open up a separate browser window and navigate to the location where you saved the two iTools SC .zip files. Highlight both of these .zip files and drag-and-drop them into the "PC Database" box on the Action Replay software screen. After you have copied the two iTools SC .zip files, a "Linux Installer" folder will appear at the top of the Action Replay screen. Click that folder and move it to the column for your USB-to-memory card converter to copy the file to your Xbox memory card. Next, copy the "Linux" save from the "Splinter Cell" save game box and move that to the Xbox memory card.

    • 4

Remove the Xbox memory card from the USB adapter after the "Linux Installer" and "Linux" Splinter Cell save game are done copying and plug it in to your Xbox controller. Turn on the Xbox. Select "Memory" and navigate to the "Memory Card." Open up the "Memory Card" and select "Linux Installer." Copy this file and the "Linux" save game to your Xbox.

    • 5

Insert the "Splinter Cell" Xbox game disk into your Xbox and load up the game. Select "Load" from the menu and then select the "Linux" save game profile. Click "Start" and wait for the Ldots iTools screen to appear. Click "B" to backup your Xbox's content. Wait for the iTools program to finish backing up your system.

    • 6

Navigate to the iTools menu and select "UDE Install." If your Xbox kernel version is earlier than 5713, use UDE 1. If your kernel version is 5713 or higher than use UDE2. Once you select the UDE version, select the "PBL-Metoo" bios loader and patcher.

    • 7

Select which bios to install on your Xbox. If your Xbox version is 1.6 or higher, then select the Evox M8 bios. If your Xbox version is 1.0-1.5, select the X2 4981 bios version. Lastly, select the EvolutionX software choice for your soon-to-be-modded Xbox loader screen and dashboard. Let the Linux loader install all of your chosen options and then power down your Xbox when the installer tells you to do so.
