How to Fix an XBox Disc Read Error

Although the disks used on the Microsoft Xbox are far superior to the cartridges of old gaming systems, you can still run into minor issues with them. If you do have trouble with a CD or DVD with your Xbox, you are going to be presented with an image on the screen that states a disk read error has occurred. This is typically due to a few different causes, most of which are easily corrected.

Instructions

    • 1

Eject the disk from the Xbox after you have receive the warning.

    • 2

Look at the bottom of the disk. See if there is any dust, dirt or fingerprints on the disk. Anything like this on the bottom side of the CD/DVD can cause the player to not read it properly.

    • 3

Clean off the bottom of the disk with a cotton cloth and water. Rub away from the circular groves in the disk. If you clean the disk following the groves you can actually push more debris into the disk, causing the disk more harm than good.

    • 4

Blow into the Xbox drive to remove any dust that may be sitting on the disk reader's laser. It may be helpful to shoot a few squirts of compressed air into the drive.

    • 5

Read what kind of disk you are inserting into the drive. Some kinds of homemade DVDs and CDs are not accepted. If this is the case, try a different disk.

    • 6

Place the disk back into the drive to see if the error has been resolved.
