"Gamertag" is a term that describes a player's username when logged in to Microsoft's Xbox Live for the Xbox 360. Gamertags are unique display names that allow players to contact other players and tell who is who during gameplay. Microsoft has also created services that allow for a player's gamertag to be used with other products such as the Zune. Players can come up with a number of original gamertags.

How to Create a Gamertag
- Users can create a gamertag when they first purchase and begin using their Xbox 360 gaming console. The player will be prompted to visit MSN.com to create an email account. Next, she must go to Xbox.com and create their gamertag through that website. During this process the player will enter all of their billing information and select the type of profile needed. Players must create a gamertag that meets Microsoft's regulations; for example, names with any type of sexual term will be flagged. This includes surnames that may have a sexual reference in their spelling. Once the player's gamertag is created the only way to change it is to pay a fee through the Xbox.com website.

- Sports games is a gaming genre that allows players to take control of their favorite athletes and teams. Gamers can show their fan loyalty by creating a gamertag that represents their favorite organizations. With a variety of different leagues and professional organizations, players can use any team they want in a creative fashion to develop their gamertag. Professional athletes who enjoy playing video games also use their names and jersey numbers when creating gamertags for online use.
Personal Identifiers in Gamertags
- Players create gamertags that include personal identifiers that they have used throughout their life. For example, a player will use a nickname that friends used to refer to them as they were growing up. For example, a player will base a gamertag on the character of a video game series such as "Final Fantasy." Other examples include the characters from the "Dragon Ball" or "Bleach" animation series. As with any name that includes a sexual reference; Microsoft will flag a name that uses copyright material, so players must be creative with how they work the character's name into the gamertag.
