Joust
Joust is an arcade game that was developed by Williams Electronics and released as a stand-up unit in 1982. Players controlled the main character who rides a flying ostrich as he tries to defeat his opponents. After defeating each set of enemies, the player advances to the next wave. This game can be played with a second player. Together, you can either defeat the enemies as a team or work against each other to clear the stage. Joust was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, Atari 2600, and the Atari 5200 among other consoles. The game is currently available through the Xbox Live and the PlayStation networks.
Altered Beast
Altered Beast is an arcade game that was developed and published by Sega in 1988. Players controlled one of two main characters who had to defeat hordes of attacking enemies throughout a variety of stages. As the player defeated these enemies, he was awarded power-ups that changed him into a mythical beast with exceptional powers. Altered Beast allowed for a single-player campaign or a multiplayer cooperative mode. This game was released to Sega Mega Drive in 1988 and then the Sega Master System and personal computers in 1989. Altered Beast is now available through the Xbox Live and PlayStation networks.
Dig Dug
Dig Dug is an arcade game that was published and released by Namco in 1982. The puzzle game was originally released in the arcade before being sent over to a number of home systems including the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Nintendo Entertainment System. Dig Dug allows for two players to take turns trying to dig their way through each maze stage. While doing so the main character must defeat the enemies on each stage by either inflating them with air or dropping rocks on them. Players progress to the next stage once they are able to defeat all the monsters. Dig Dug was re-released for the Xbox Live Arcade and the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.
Double Dragon
Released in 1987, Double Dragon is a classic side scrolling action game that was originally available on the Nintendo Entertainment System and as an arcade stand-up unit. Today, the title has been re-released for download through Xbox Live and the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console. Players controlled Billy and Jimmy Lee in a quest to defeat the Black Warriors gang and rescue Billy's girlfriend. Throughout the game, players learn a variety of techniques while fighting multiple enemies. Each stage has a main boss character that must be defeated before passing through to the next section. This was the first title in the Double Dragon series that eventually spawned multiple games, toys, cartoons, and even movies.
