Your Xbox Live gamertag is like an online fingerprint for online gaming. Your gamertag identfies you to other gamers on Xbox 360, and it also stores information like your gaming bio, preferences, gamerscore points and more. Without the gamertag, your gaming system loses its personalized touch, and you won't have access to certain features purchased using the gamertag account. If you want to use your gamertag on a different system than your normal Xbox 360 console, you need to recover the gamertag. Recovery essentially transfers your account to a new Xbox 360 unit. (see Ref. 1) You can recover your gamertag as many times as you want, but it is only usable on one Xbox 360 at a time, and you'll always need to do a gamertag recovery when changing between systems.
