How to Change Your Password for Your Gamertag on Modern Warfare 2

Gamertags serve as a player's custom username on Microsoft's online console gaming service, Xbox Live. This service extends across games and services on platforms including the Xbox 360, Microsoft Zune and Windows Live. If you've forgotten or misplaced your password or want to change it for security reasons, the change applies not only to "Modern Warfare 2," but to any game playable on Xbox Live, as each game makes use of the same universal Gamertag account.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Xbox.com in your Internet browser.

    • 2

Click "Sign In" near the Xbox Live logo in the upper right-hand corner of the site. If the site logs you in automatically, click "Sign Out" before clicking "Sign In." The "Sign In" button brings you to the login page for your Windows Live ID, which is tied to your Gamertag, your online identification for "Modern Warfare 2" and other Xbox Live games.

    • 3

Click the text that says "Forgot Your Password?" on the Windows Live ID login page. This brings you to the "Reset Your Password" screen. Click the circle next to "I forgot my password." When the text "Reset your password" appears, click on it.

    • 4

Enter your Windows Live ID, the email address you used when you created your Gamertag, in the "Windows Live ID" field. In the field labeled "Characters," enter the distorted letters shown in the image above the field. Hit "Next" when finished.

    • 5

Select "Send yourself a password reset email message" on the next screen, then click "Send Message" to authorize the email, which contains instructions for resetting your password. Click the "Done" button when the site confirms that the message has been sent.

    • 6

Check the email account you signed in to Windows Live with. A few minutes after selecting "Send Message" at Xbox.com, you should receive an email from Microsoft Customer Support. Open the email and click the link contained in the body of the message. This brings you to Windows Live's "Create a New Password" page. You may be prompted to confirm your email address before the page appears.

    • 7

Type a new Gamertag password in the field labeled "New password." Type the password again in exactly the same fashion in the "Retype new password field." Check the "Password expiration" box if you'd like your new password to expire every 72 days (this option will prompt you to create a new password regularly). Click the "Continue" button.

Check your email for a message from Microsoft Customer Support confirming the password change.
