How to Play Free XBox 360 Games

Games for the XBox 360 tend to cost anywhere from $5 to $60, depending on the age, condition and type of game. While you can't hop on XBox Live and begin downloading any game you want for free, you can download certain games for free. If you see a game you like that doesn't offer a free version, you can usually download the free trial version of the game. You need at least an XBox Live Silver membership -- which is free -- to download games.

  Turn on the XBox 360 console and sign into your XBox Live profile. Press "Up" on the left analog stick until you get to "Game Marketplace." Click "Explore Game Content."

  Scroll down or up to "Arcade," "Indie" or "Demos." The specified game list will appear. Click on any game you wish to play. The download window will pop up, along with a description of the game.

  Look at how much the game costs. Some games, such as certain arcade games, are free. Demos are always free. If the game is free, click "Download Full Version." Click "Download Demo" for demos. If the game is not free, it will most likely offer a free trial, so you can still play part of the game for free. Click "Download Free Trial."

  Launch the game when the XBox 360 notifies you that the game is downloaded and installed. You can find installed games in the "My XBox" menu on the main XBox 360 screen.
