Check the back of the game's case to make sure it has online features. Some games may not feature any online playable content.
Make sure your Xbox is connected to the Internet. The new style "Slim" Xbox 360s have a wireless internet adapter built-in, but older, original models require an external wireless adapter to access a WiFi network. Alternatively, you can plug an Ethernet cable directly into the back of both versions of the console.
Sign up for an Xbox Live Gold membership. If you have Silver membership, you can only watch online games, and not play them yourself. To do this, navigate to "My Xbox" on your Xbox dashboard, select your avatar, and choose the option called "Join Xbox Live."
Insert your Xbox game disc into your Xbox 360 console and once it loads, look in the game's main menu for any options or game modes that refer to online multiplayer features. These features and names will vary depending on the game you are playing. Your Xbox will automatically connect to Xbox Live using your Gold account.
