Troubleshootiong XBox 360 Live

Xbox Live is a service hosted on several Microsoft servers that allows your console to connect with others for playing games online. Additionally, Xbox Live lets you connect to media streaming services and social network pages. If you are unable to sign in to the Xbox Live service, you will need to test the Xbox Live connection on your console. The Xbox Live network test provides you with the information necessary to determine what area of your connection is failing to connect to service.

Instructions

  1. Test Xbox Live Connection

    • 1

Go to "My Xbox" on the dashboard. Select "System Settings," and press the "A" button.

    • 2

Select "Network Settings" and press "A." This loads an "Available Networks" screen.

    • 3

Select your network type and press the "A" button. Choose the "Wired" option if you have an Ethernet cord connected to the back of your Xbox. Choose the "Wireless" option if you connected your Xbox to a wireless router.

    • 4

Select "Test Xbox Live Connection" and then press the "A" button. The console will go through a series of three tests to confirm the connectivity. If you fail to connect to Xbox Live a dialog box will prompt you with the reason. Continue reading if the test failed.

    DNS Failed Error

    • 5

Select "Configure Network" while still on the "Network Settings" dialog.

    • 6

Look at the "DNS Settings" on the "Basic Settings" tab. If the "DNS Settings" is "Automatic" and the "Primary DNS Server" is "0.0.0.0" the Xbox is failing to obtain the DNS information from your network. Look at the number in "Automatic IP Settings;" if this number starts with "169.xx," read the last section to continue troubleshooting this issue. Continue reading if this number starts with anything else.

If the "IP Settings" and "DNS Settings" are set to "Manual," and the Primary DNS Server shows "0.0.0.0," you will need to manually input the static DNS address.

    • 7

Select "DNS Settings," and press the "A" button.

    • 8

Select "Primary DNS Server" and press "A." This displays an "Enter the address..." dialog.

    • 9

Use your d-pad to enter your static DNS server address, and then select "Done." Your DNS information can be found in your router's configuration page or by calling your Internet service provider.

You could also use the following Google Public DNS server address.

      "8.8.8.8"

    DHCP or Static Connection Error

    • 10

Select "Configure Network" while still on the "Network Settings" dialog.

    • 11

Look at the number next to IP Settings. If the "IP Settings" is set to "Manual" and the numbers start with a "0.0.0.0," your static address has not been configured. If you do not have a static IP address or are not sure, you should contact your Internet service provider.

If the "IP Settings" is set to "Automatic" and the number shown starts with "169.xxx," the Xbox is failing to obtain the address information from your network device. Read the last section for an all-in-one troubleshooting technique to confirm Xbox Live connectivity.

    • 12

Select "Manual Settings" and press the "A" button. Enter your static address information into the fields. Select "Done" and press the "A" button to save your changes and then restart the console.

    Connect Modem Directly to Xbox

    • 18

Turn off your Xbox. Disconnect the Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter or router Ethernet cable currently connected to your Xbox.

    • 19

Unplug your Internet modem from the power outlet. Trace the Ethernet cable from the back of the modem and unplug it from the computer or device it is connected to.

    • 20

Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the back of your Xbox 360.

    • 21

Plug your modem's power cord back in, and wait until the "Online" or "Internet" light is green.

    • 22

Turn on your Xbox 360 and try to sign in to Xbox Live. If connection to Xbox Live is successful, the problem resides within your router or gateway.

If connection to Xbox Live is still unsuccessful, you will need to contact your Internet service provider to confirm if their service is compatible with Xbox Live.
