How to Improve an Xbox Connection

Xbox 360 owners use Xbox Live to play games against their peers, watch Netflix movies, view game previews and download new games on Xbox Live Arcade. Connections can be made wired or wirelessly using the Microsoft wireless networking adapter. If you are having trouble with your Xbox Live connection, you can try some things that should help improve your service.

Instructions

    • 1

Move other wireless devices that use radio frequencies away from the path between your Xbox 360 and router. Devices such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, cell phones and other video gaming consoles often use the 2.4-GHz band and cause interference with a wireless Xbox Live connection.

    • 2

Switch your wireless network to the 802.11a or 802.11g operation if it is using a different frequency. Consult your router's instructions for the steps needed to do this. You will also need to adjust your wireless networking adapter to the 802.11a or 802.11g frequency, which you can do by entering the Xbox Dashboard and going to "Network Settings."

    • 3

Move the Xbox 360 to a different location. Microsoft recommends that when you position your console, you should imagine a straight line between the Xbox 360 and your router and put as few obstructions as possible between the two. In general, you should not allow more than two walls or floors between the console and the router.

    • 4

Secure your wireless network if it is not password protected. If the network is not secure, people in the immediate area can pick up your signal and capture some of the network traffic. Follow your router instructions to set a WPA or WEP security key. You can then input this in "Network Settings" on the Xbox Dashboard.
