Homemade XBox Live Headset

Microsoft&'s proprietary headsets for the Xbox 360 console are notorious in the gaming community for developing poor sound quality and transmission problems as a result of prolonged usage. Rather than purchasing another Microsoft headset that might develop the same issues, you can make your own using an old computer or phone headset and a simple adapter. Save yourself a pocketful of cash and avoid another potentially frustrating consumer experience.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer or phone headset with 3.5mm plug
  • 3.5mm to 2.5mm headphone adapter
  • Electric tape (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the 3.5mm male plug extending from your computer or phone headset into the 3.5mm female port of a 3.5mm to 2.5mm headphone adapter. Be sure to push the plug until you hear a click.

    • 2

Insert the 2.5mm male plug from your adapter into the 2.5mm female port on your Xbox 360 controller. As before, push until you hear a click.

    • 3

Turn on your Xbox 360 and select a random friend from your Friends List.

    • 4

Select "Send a Message" and then select "Voice Message." Record a short audio message after selecting the Record button (the red circle).

    • 5

Select the Stop button (the white square) after making your recording, and then press the Play button (the white triangle). You should hear your voice in your headset, thereby verifying that the adapter effectively works.
