Connect your Xbox 360 to your internet modem with the Ethernet cable. If you are using a router, connect the Ethernet cable to the router.
Turn on your Xbox 360. If you already have an Xbox Live account, sign in. If you do not have an Xbox Live account, select ̶0;Join Xbox Live̶1; from the Xbox 360̵7;s dashboard and create a new account. You can also create an account online at Xbox.com, but you need to be signed in to an Xbox Live account on your Xbox 360.
Select the Gold Xbox Live account when asked to choose between Gold or Silver. The Silver account will give you access to the Xbox Live Marketplace and allow you to chat with friends, but only the Gold account will allow you to play games online. As of 2010, you can choose to pay monthly for $7.99, every three months for $19.99, or yearly for $49.99. Input your credit or debit card information when signing up for the Gold account.
Insert an Xbox Live compatible game. It will say on the back of the game box whether or not it is compatible with online multiplayer.
Select the multiplayer component from the game's main menu and select the Xbox Live option to enter an online multiplayer game. Consult your game's manual for specific instructions, as every game is different.
Connect to an online game and play.
