How to Play XBox Live Games With Dial Up

A dial-up connection limits your capabilities on the Internet. Most sites, applications, devices and video games are designed with broadband in mind. In fact, game consoles such as the Xbox 360 do not have an official way to connect directly to a dial-up modem and use dialing software. There is a way around this, however, and you can play at least a few games online with Xbox Live.

Instructions

    • 1
An Ethernet cable resembles a large phone cable.

Unplug the power from both the Xbox 360 and your computer. Connect your Ethernet cable to the computer and Xbox Ethernet ports.

    • 2

Reconnect the power to both devices. Turn your computer on, but leave the Xbox off for now.

    • 3

Open Windows network settings in your control panel. For Windows XP users: Click on "Start," then click on "Control Panel." Look for an icon that will either say "Network and Internet Connections," or "Network" connections. If you found "Network" connections, you are where you need to be. If you click on "Network and Internet Connections," click on "Network" connections at the bottom right.

For Windows Vista / 7 users: Click on "Start," then on "Control Panel." Look for an icon called "Network and Internet." Below that icon will be a clickable link named "View network status and tasks." Click on that line to go to the "Network and Sharing center."

Configure Windows network settings for Internet connection sharing. For Windows XP users: Locate your dial-up connection within the "Network connections" page. Right-click on that icon, then select "Properties" from the right-click menu. A properties window will come up on your screen. Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top. Put a check mark by clicking in the box stating, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection. Also, put a check in the box next to, "Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet." Click the "OK" or "Apply" button and you can close the Control Panel.

For Windows Vista / 7 users: Click on the "Change Adapter Settings" link on the left-hand side of the Network and Sharing center. Locate your dial-up connection within the "Network connections" page. Right-click on your modem's icon, then select "Properties" from the right-click menu. On the top of the properties menu, click on the "Sharing" tab. Click in the box next to, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Click the "OK" button and close the Control Panel.
