How to Bypass the Network Adapter of XBox Live

Since XBox Live debuted in 2002, it has changed the way users play video games. Boasting a variety of add-ons, the online service brings gamers together for competition and fun. According to XBox Live general manager Marc Whitten, the service had 23 million subscribers as of February 2010. Many gamers rely on the wireless network adapter to enhance the capabilities of their service, thanks to lightning-fast connectivity and quality. It will, however, cost you around $100 more. If you want to cut costs for XBox Live and bypass the XBox Live network adapter, it is a simple process.

    • 1

Select the proper location. Placement is still key when determining the speed and reliability of your connection. You will want your XBox 360 setup in a location close to the wireless router. While it may not be necessary to ensure everything works, it does influence waiting time. Rearrange if necessary, and make sure that all your connections are properly secured, both internally (pets, unruly children) and externally (lightning strikes, power surges).

    • 2

Connect to your laptop. Most modern laptops come with wireless cards built in. Harness the power of your laptop as a cheaper alternative to connectivity. In order to do this, connect your XBox 360 to your laptop via crossover cable. This speeds up communication between the two devices, so when the time comes to bridge connections, you will enjoy maximum speed and response time.

    • 3

Power up. Make sure that both your XBox 360 console and your laptop are powered on. Once you have done so, wait for the operating system to your laptop to load properly.

    • 4

Find your wireless Internet connection. Click the "Start" button in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Next, open up the Control Panel, followed by Network Connections. Select the Wireless Connection with your right mouse button. Choose Properties from the drop menu.

    • 5

Bridge connections. Find the Advanced tab, and click. At this juncture, be looking for a checkbox that says, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." Once you have clicked this option, you will see another drop menu. Find the option, "Local Area Connection," and enable it. This is where your XBox is hooked in. Connections are now linked, or bridged. You are ready to go.
