Xbox 360 Console
The most important thing you will need to access your Xbox online is a working Xbox 360 console. It is the only device that allows you to connect to Xbox Live. Original Xbox consoles had access to Xbox Live for many years, but Xbox is dropping coverage for them as of April 15, 2010.
Internet Connection
An Internet connection is another necessity to playing Xbox online. Xbox Live requires high-speed Internet access, such as a cable modem might provide. The Xbox 360 console uses an Ethernet jack to connect to the Internet, so you will need an Ethernet cable and one open Ethernet port on either your modem or your home computer. If you do not have an open port, purchase a router, which allows you to connect multiple devices to the Internet at once. If you already have Wi-Fi in your home, you can buy a wireless adapter from Xbox.
Gift or Credit Card
If you buy a new Xbox 360 console, you will likely receive a bonus card that gives you one month of free Xbox Live access. If you do not have a gift card, you can use a credit card to activate your membership. Prices vary depending on the membership level you choose. The most basic membership, Silver, is free. However, it does not grant access to all the online capabilities that Xbox Live has to offer.
An Xbox Live Account
After you successfully connect your Xbox 360 to the Internet, you will be asked to create an account. Enter your basic personal information and create a username and password. Once you finish the signup process and enter your credit or gift card information, you will have access to Xbox Live.
