How to Set Up Wireless for the Xbox 360: IP Address Failed

When connecting your Xbox to the Internet, you have the option to use a wireless router and adapter that connects to the video game console. An occasional error occurs with the device where the Xbox is unable to find an IP address from the router. This occurs when the wireless router does not broadcast the network ID, so the Xbox is unable to connect.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a browser window and enter the IP address of the router. For most routers, this IP address is 192.168.1.1. Enter the username and password of the administrator account for the router and select the Broadcast page. Take note of the SSID in the router settings. This is required if you have broadcasting turned off.

    • 2

Ensure the broadcast mode (if the router is broadcasting) is set to "Mixed Mode." Navigate to the Security page of the router and select "WEP and WPA" encryption. The Xbox wireless device only supports these two types of encryption.

    • 3

Turn on the Xbox console and go to the "Xbox Dashboard" screen. In this screen, select "System Settings" and choose "My Xbox." Select "Network Settings" from this screen and then select "Configure Network."

    • 4

Click the "Basic Settings" tab. This opens a screen where you can set the wireless network. Select "Wireless Mode" from the options.

    • 5

Select "Specify Unlisted Network" from the network settings screen if your router does not broadcast. You will be unable to see the available network from a wireless connection if broadcasting is turned off. Enter the name of the network found in the router console area from Step 1.

    • 6

Click "Apply" and then click "Test" to verify the settings are complete. If the wireless adapter on the Xbox is able to acquire an IP address, the device displays a steady green light.
