Xbox Live
Xbox Live is an online service, which requires you to register for service. Once subscribed, Xbox Live allows you to create a gaming profile as well as giving players the opportunity to use the Xbox Arcade service and marketplace. You also have the ability to talk to other people on the service with the use of a headset. Xbox Live Silver is free but is limited because you cannot play online with others. Xbox Gold has all the capabilities of Xbox Silver, but it has the addition of multi-player gaming. You have to pay for Xbox Gold service. All that is needed for Xbox Live service is Internet access and either a 512MB memory card or 20GB hard drive. Sometimes, connection problems can occur, hindering the Xbox Live experience.
Xbox Live Connection Problems
Your Internet connection can cause connection Xbox Live connection problems. If your service is down or interrupted, Xbox Live will not connect. Another problem that can is that the Xbox 360 may be connected to the Internet, but the connection service is still down. This can be caused by IP, network or router problems.
More Connection Problems
Other connection problems can be caused by hardware. If you are using wireless, you must have the adapter configured to connect to the service. Also, if you are experiencing connection issues, it may be traced to a loose or damaged Ethernet cable. If the Ethernet is not fully plugged into the Xbox 360 console or PC, there will be no connection. Unplugged or down routers and modems will also cause issues. Verify that these devices are on and operational.
Error Codes
Error codes "80072741," "80072ee2," "800700b" or "8000FFFF" indicate either a network configuration or system maintenance issue, and you will only be able to connect to your My Xbox, Friends and Welcome pages. Other features will not be available. Live connection problems will happen if your console does not receive an IP address from your router or modem, if the Xbox 360 is set up to receive it automatically.
Modems and More Issues
If a connection problem persists, it may be due to a damaged router or modem. If this is the case, they will need replacement. Your router must be able to handle Internet traffic, known as "ICMP." The ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is in charge of information, control and error messages as well as being used to test Internet connections. If your router cannot handle ICMP, you cannot connect to Xbox Live. If you have configured your Xbox console to use manual IP settings and you have changed your router, its settings or moved the Xbox onto another network, an update of the console's IP settings is needed. Some problems can be fixed by simply verifying that cord connections are secure and if necessary components are on; turning the Xbox, PC and router or modem "Off" and then "On" can fix problems as well. If serious problems continue, contact the Xbox 360 support center.
