Types
There are two types of XBOX technicians: those who work independently and those who work directly for Microsoft. For an individual to become a repair technician, they must pass a test given by the company, but not all individuals work for them. There are many technicians that work for game or entertainment stores or work on their own with their own shop. Both have the talent and skills needed to fix the system, but they work for different people.
Significance
The XBOX game consoles, including the XBOX 360 have some specific problems associated with their internal components. On the newer systems, the light sometimes flashes three times, which is known as the "red light of death" before the system shuts down. While it sounds ominous, repair technicians can fix this problem. They're also capable of fixing other problems such as the system being unable to read a disc. Owners are advised to send their system to a professional rather than risk causing more damage by attempting repairs themselves.
Training
Prior to becoming an XBOX repair technician, an individual needs to study computers and computer repair in both high school and college. They also learn more about electronic systems and wireless programs, all of which they'll see when working with XBOX systems. They're also recommended to spend some time playing with the system and learning how it works. Then they contact Microsoft and take their test at a local testing center. Once they pass the test, they'll be able to work as a repair tech.
Function
An XBOX repair technician diagnoses minor and larger problems with the Microsoft gaming consoles. The owner of the console typically contacts this individual after they notice a problem. Those individuals who contact Microsoft directly and send in their system will have it go directly to a licensed technician. The tech identifies the problem and finds a solution, be it a cleaning or something more serious like replacing the hard drive. These technicians usually have a fast turnaround on repairs.
Warning
There are some individuals billing themselves as XBOX repair technicians when they aren't licensed by Microsoft. They typically advertise on CraigsList and other similar classified ad websites. Using one of these individuals can result in some serious problems to the system and it will also void the warranty on the console. Prior to using any technician, it's important to check their qualifications and ask to see a copy of their license to ensure they're approved by Microsoft.
