How to Make Satellite Internet Work for Halo 3

Satellite Internet is a source of frustration for online gamers. Although some gamers have reported that they are able to play Halo 3 and other online games using a satellite Internet connection, most gamers can't. The problem with satellite Internet is latency. Latency is the time that it takes for the Internet to transport information. Satellite internet has slow latency because the information must travel more than 20,000 miles to and from satellites. While latency problems can't be fixed, you can tweak your computer to process information faster, and this will increase the likelihood of success of playing Halo 3 over satellite Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure no one else in your house is using your satellite Internet connection when you log in online to play Halo 3. Multiple users will certainly slow down the game.

    • 2

Run virus, spyware and adware scans on your computer. Viruses, spyware and adware all act to slow your computer down. Allow the anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-adware programs to remove any malicious programs from your computer that will adversely affect the processing speed.

    • 3

Tweak your older computer to increase available bandwidth. Computers using Windows XP and older operating systems reserve up to 20 percent bandwidth. Tweaking the default settings on these systems will make that bandwidth available for your online gaming.

    • 4

Log onto your computer under the administrator account to start the process of increasing your bandwidth. Click on "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop screen, and click on "Run." Type "gpedit.msc" in the "Run" box. When the "Group Policy MMC" box opens, click on the "Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> QoS Packet Scheduler Branches" link. Click on the "Reserve Bandwidth" link. Change the bandwidth limit percent to "0." Click on "OK" and restart your computer.

    • 5

Close programs that are running in the background because every running program uses your computer system's resources. When attempting to play Halo 3 online, close all but the absolutely necessary programs. To see which programs are running when you start your computer, push the following buttons simultaneously: "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del," which opens the "Task Manager" window. Click on "Applications" and "Processes" to view programs that are running on your system. You can close any unneeded programs by pushing "End Process."
