Instructions

    • 1

Check your “Parental Control” settings. On the Dashboard, go to the “System” tab. Select “Family Settings.” Under the option “Access to Xbox Live,” the current setting must read “Allowed” in order for you to communicate on Xbox Live. If you are using a child profile on Xbox Live, your ability to communicate may have been purposely disabled and you will have to gain permission to communicate on Xbox Live.

    • 2

Power off, then power on your Xbox 360 console. Like some PCs that have gone awry, your Xbox 360 may just need to be restarted. Wait 30 seconds before powering on the Xbox 360.

    • 3

Check to see that your headset and controller are working properly. The problem may be as simple as your or your Friend’s microphone malfunctioning or a poor wireless controller connection.

    • 4

Remove the controller’s rechargeable battery. If you use a rechargeable battery for your controller, the source of your woes may be the battery, even if it is fully charged. Detach the battery from the controller, then reattach it. Be sure that the battery is fully charged before reattaching it back to the controller.

Test your Internet connection. On the Dashboard, go to the System tab. Select “Network Settings” from the menu. Select “Text Xbox Live Connection.” This will sign you out of Xbox Live and begin a series of tests. After the tests are complete, be sure that the results for each test reads “Confirmed” or “Connected.” If they do not, select the “More Info” button to learn more detailed information. You may want to consult an Xbox Live tech support specialist before adjusting any settings under this tab.

    • 6

Check that your “NAT” setting reads “Open.” When the Xbox Live Connection test is complete, the last test listed will be the NAT test, found at the bottom of the tab. Be sure that the results of this test reads “Open.” If your results read “Strict” or “Moderate,” your router settings are preventing your Xbox from communicating with other users except those who have an “Open” NAT setting. Consult your router manufacturer to learn how to change your router’s NAT setting to “Open.”

Reset your router. If your connection test results read “Confirmed” or “Connected” and your NAT setting reads “Open,” but you are still unable to have a Private Chat with your Friend, power off your router, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on and sign back on to Live.
