How to Recover a Gamer Tag on the PC

A Gamertag is the 15-character user name used by every player on the Xbox Live gaming network. Your Gamertag can be used on any system or device compatible with Xbox LIVE. This includes your Xbox 360, Zune device, XNA Creators Club account and on Games For Windows account, which is a Windows Vista application that lets you use Xbox LIVE on Windows machines. However, if you ever plan to switch from Games for Windows to another system, you must recover your Gamertag before doing so.

     Navigate to the "Games For Windows" page via your preferred web browser. Sign in to your Xbox LIVE account with your personal login credentials.

     Scroll down the screen to the "Recover Gamertag" button. Double-click on the button.

     Click on the "Recover Gamertag" button once more when prompted by Xbox LIVE.

     Enter your Windows LIVE login credentials. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the gamertag recovery process.
