How to Make My Ping Lower for XBox Live

Networking for video game consoles can be difficult, because they lack the same diagnostic tools of PCs. However, the technologies behind networking for Xbox Live are very similar to those powering computer networks, and many of the same techniques can be used to increase performance. Ping started as a tool for testing connectivity between PCs. It has evolved to refer to a measurement, in milliseconds, of the time it takes a single piece of information to pass between server and client.

Disable any other devices in the area that might be taking more than their share of network bandwidth. Usual culprits include computers that are streaming video or downloading torrents. Bandwidth is not unlimited, and sometimes simply clearing out other users can improve your ping.

Make sure that the Xbox is running on the medium with the highest speed potential. Wired connections are faster and more reliable than wireless. If it's possible to physically plug in to your router, strongly consider using a cable rather than wireless. If you must use wireless, make sure that no other devices in the area could be interfering, such as microwaves, cordless phones, and large electrical devices such as a generator. All of these can interfere with wireless communications.

Play with friends that you know. Ping is largely dependent on location, and if you're trying to connect to a server thousands of miles away, no amount of bandwidth will decrease your ping.
